The fragrance industry is a subtle science that has existed for generations, the fine art has slowly evolved overtime to accommodate a variety of styles, tastes and cultural influences. According to global industry analysts, the industry will be valued at 45.6 billion dollars by 2018, driven primarily by growth expected in the underpenetrated emerging markets, innovative product launches, consumer urbanisation, higher spending propensity and the heightened importance on personal appearance. In addition, increased demand for youth-oriented, floral and exotic fragrances and celebrity perfumes is setting the pace for rapid market expansion.

Bringing together industry professionals and several iconic names for decades, the Fragrance Foundation is now one of the most prestigious organizations to be associated with because of its continued emphasis on innovation, education and most important of all, appreciation. Since it’s inception in 1949, the platform has been established in the USA, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK and Dubai.

The UAE chapter – Fragrance Foundation Arabia, was launched in 2008 and since has grown from strength to strength welcoming several new members each year. Every year the respective Fragrance Foundations around the globe organize the prestigious FiFi Awards and Dubai being no exception hosted a red-carpet night at the Jumeirah Mina’ A’Salam on the 11th of November. The evening brought together veterans, future fragrance leaders and exemplary young executives to commemorate their achievements and award category winners with the coveted fragrance foundation trophy. The categories included:

  • Niche Fragrance of the Year

  • Exclusive Collection of the Year

  • Oriental set of the year

  • Fragrance of the Year – Jury

  • My Favourite Perfume of the Year – Bloggers Jury

Several of the biggest names present at the event includes Arabian Oud, Abdul Samad Al Qurashi, Oud Elite, Chopard, Bottega Veneta, P&G Prestige, Bvlgari, Interparfums USA, Miu Miu and Jimmy Choo. Active online voting has been going on for several weeks now, which I think is a great tool to get the public involved, making their choices an integral part of the outcome. Today the foundation has become an international source for historic, cultural, scientific and industry related reference materials and has clearly distinguished itself as one of the most exclusive. With a keen interest to further FF’s reach globally, organizations like these are integral to help preserve and push industries and its key players forward. Considering the Middle Eastern audience, I would definitely have liked to see specific categories for homemade and Oud scents, which I think would honour a lot of niche fragrance makers that have captured the local culture, heritage and ancient arts of perfumery. Now, finally to the moment you’ve been waiting for, the announcements of the winners. The competition was extremely tight as a lot of fragrances exceeded expectations and with emphasis on making scents edgy, fresh and versatile, each of the nominees were winners in their own right. With constant innovation and perfumers targeting niche demographics, it comes as no surprise that the fragrance industry still has several untapped avenues for further success.
