Bee’ah is a Sharjah-based waste management and sustainability company, that has taken firm strides towards fulfilling its mission of zero waste to landfills. Created by Zaha Hadid, its new headquarters design is inspired by sand dunes and the robust structure of this 7000 sq. m building can withstand extreme weather conditions. Sustainability wise, this proposal has accommodated numerous smart energy saving strategies which include interior courtyard spaces, adjustable openings, natural ventilation, flooding the interiors with ample daylight, installing PV panels, using waste heat to provide hot water and even recovering materials from the landfill to utilize in the construction of the building. The HQ will be partially powered by energy generated at the waste management facility, while the rest of the site holds the world’s largest gasification waste-to-energy facility, the 3rd largest material recovery plant, a compost plant for turning organic waste into fertiliser, recycling centres for C&D, electronic, paper, wood, organic, industrial, plastic and hazardous waste along with lagoons for processing liquid industrial waste and contaminated water.

With new advancements in technology and global expertise coming on board thru various platforms, there is no doubt that the zero-waste-to-landfill mission will definitely see success. International companies that have developed smart practices, successful approaches and innovative environmental solutions will be easily absorbed into one of the Middle East’s fastest growing sectors.
